Outreach

First Lutheran Church’s outreach ministry impact is felt in our local Newton community, within the state of Iowa and around the world.  Here are some of the ways First Lutheran makes a positive difference in people’s lives by offering time, energy and resources to share Christ’s love with others.

Congregational and Pastoral Care

Part of First Lutheran’s ministry involves giving hope to people in difficult times.  All members of First Lutheran strive to be encouraging and supportive of one another in our spiritual walks.  Some struggles in life require the aid of a trained professional.  Pastoral Care offers confidential, compassionate counseling.  His training enables him to give people the necessary help or connect them with the resources that they need.

First Lutheran’s ministry of caring for its members is not limited to the church building.  The Church offers communion and pastoral care for members unable to leave their homes.

Community Outreach

First Lutheran is active in the community in many ways.  From visiting shut-in with cookies and a smile, cleaning up school playgrounds, or serving community meals.  Many members are also leaders within the community group Neighbors Helping Neighbors, which provides free laundry nights on the 2nd and 4th Monday nights of each month for homeless and those who are disadvantaged.

Choices in Mission

First Lutheran has an active group who focuses on local service projects and ministries ranging from an annual CROP Walk to combat hunger, to helping build new homes with the local Habitat for Humanity chapter, to holding regular food drives and packaging food with Kids Against Hunger.  The Service Committee connects with the community to help minster to its needs.

Each month members of First Lutheran bring forward opportunities for helping others.  We call it Choices in Mission.  Donations from the congregation in support of the Choices in Mission project are matched by church funds during that month.  The Service Committee facilitates these activities, and helps in the planning and organization of major initiatives such as educational and medical mission trips within the United States and in Africa.

See our Choices in Mission page for more information on projects.
