What to Expect

Each church has its own personality and worship style. We encourage you to join us in worship to get to know us better.

Here’s some information to help you feel more comfortable before and during your visit. Please contact us if you have additional questions.

Parking

First Lutheran Church is located near downtown Newton on the corner of E 3rd St N and N 3rd Ave E. Parking is available on the street and in a parking lot east of the church.

Entrances

Accessible entrances are located on the southwest corner of the church. A covered carport on the west side of the church provides convenience and protection from inclement weather. An elevator is located immediately inside this entrance to access other floors of the church.

Entrances to the sanctuary are also located on the southeast side of the church.

Attire

Some of our members prefer formal attire while others prefer casual dress. The choice is yours.

Worship Service

We will warmly welcome you. Details of the service are projected onto screens at the front of the church.

We’d love to know you were a guest at our church. Printed cards are located in the pew near the hymnals. Both members and guests are encouraged to fill out the cards and place them in the offering plate when it is passed.

First Lutheran Church has three hymnals for liturgy and music:
Evangelical Lutheran Worship (Cranberry)
With One Voice (Blue)
Worship and Praise (Purple)
Our services include traditional and contemporary liturgies and music.

Occasionally we have special music provided by members.

Sharing of the Peace

At the designated point in the service, worshippers are invited to share God’s peace and to introduce themselves to others. Common greetings include “God’s peace” or “The peace of the Lord be with you.”

Communion

At First Lutheran Church all are welcome to the Lord’s table for communion, including children. If you choose not to take communion, you may come forward for a blessing or remain in your seat. Those communing will come forward, receive bread and a choice of wine or grape juice, then return to their seats. Further instructions will be provided during the service.

Children

First Lutheran Church welcomes children at our services. An unstaffed nursery is located in the northeast corner of the lower level for parents of little ones who need an area where they can move around or quiet down.
